One of the great things about the PS3 is the Playstation store where you can buy and download games. Most of them are older PS1 ports but a few of them are newer, simpler games. Pixel Junk has been working on a few titles and this is one of the newer games to come out. I thought I would give this one a try since I heard so much about it. And for $10 this was a great bargain and excellent time spender.
Monsters is a simple strategy/building game built around you protecting your tribe. You wind up building little towers that shoot arrows, cannon balls, lasers and bees - to name a few - to protect your tribe from invading monsters. Completing levels opens up new paths for you to herd your tribe around on a “world map”. As simple and cute as this game looks, it actually has its difficult moments, so it proves to be a great challenge.
I really enjoyed the types of towers you build since each one is better for different enemies. A nice feature was that you could also “level up” these towers so they became more powerful and handled enemies. Granted I think a turret gun should pretty much fuck anything up but here it only took care of flying enemies. One of the more memorable towers was one that was a beehive and spawns bees to attack enemies…can you say “hornets nest”?!
This is a more simplistic game, and thus the music was terrible. I am not expecting King Diamond here or anything, but this music just drives you nuts. I wound up playing with the volume down for the majority of the time. I know it’s a downloadable game but please, Pixel Junk, don’t hire your niece with the Casio to do your next game’s music.
This was a great fun little game to play and I highly recommend it. I would have liked to see it expand a little more, but for $10 you really can’t expect much else. So get your nerd hat on, turn down the volume and save the villagers at all costs! written by: Alex Chechs posted by: JoJo BA
