People In Planes

Ariane: So whom am I talking to?

Peter: (in sexy Welsh accent) My name is Peter. I play guitar in People in Planes.

Ariane: Peter…Hi. How long have you guys been a band?

Peter: We’ve been a band on and off for about eight years - basically since we were 16. We started playing in school and the lead singer and myself have been friends since we were little toddlers. We lived on the same street and got into music at the same time. We were initially a four piece for a long time called Tetra Splendour and we had a record out and a couple of singles in the UK but that kind of fell through. We were on EMI and the whole thing fucked up.

Ariane: Oh yeah? Well, you are on an indie label now, right?

Peter: Yeah, exactly. We’re on Wind Up. It’s much cooler now. We’ve been People in Planes for about two - two and a half years, and basically ever since we became People in Planes we instantly got recognition in America. We’ve been doing all of our touring over here for about a year now.

Ariane: How is that? Aren’t you from a small town in Wales?

Peter: We’re from a place called Porthcall and even in our previous incarnations of the band we’d moved away from our hometown a bit and lived quite a few years in Cardiff (the capital city of Wales). We toured around for a long time and I just think that over here it’s more of a case of having good songs and being a good live band that ultimately makes you prevail.

Ariane: So, before you were People in Planes you were Tetra Splendour and before that you were Robots in the Sky. What’s up with all the name changes?

Peter: Initially, we were called Reverend Brown when we were in school. Basically, we started to get into a sort of psychedelic period of our life when we were like, 16, as one does in a small town with nothing much to do.

Ariane: (giggling) A little drug experimentation?

Peter: Of course, yeah (laughs). That sort of precipitated the name Robots in the Sky because we wanted something crazy. Then we did a limited red 7-inch vinyl as Robots in the Sky that was put out on a local indie label in Cardiff. Then we got signed up to EMI and they wanted to change our name because there was another band at the time called Robots in Disguise. They had just started doing well and getting press and the press was getting confused between the two. So that’s the reason they had us change our names, which I’m pretty happy about now. It’s pretty much the coolest thing that ever happened. After EMI dropped us, we were trying to get signed again and get back in the limelight so we just changed our name and got a new band member. People in Planes is about having a rocky past and how people in planes are literally on a journey through the sky. It’s about not knowing where you’re going and it’s about destiny and being led through life. It’s all about chasing the dream. Most people don’t really get to achieve what they want in life. The name People in Planes is about knowing what you want, rather than just achieving it, because it’s so unlikely that you will, you know?

Ariane: I like that. So, how’s the tour going? Where are you right now?

Peter: We are looking for moose in the trees somewhere in eastern Canada. We’ve been up in Canada about a month and we were in America touring before that.

Ariane: Do you know what you’re being interviewed for?

Peter: Uh, yeah, It’s for Burning Angel dot com.

Ariane: Have you been to the site?

Peter: Yeah, I did have a little bit of a skim through. There’s a lot of cool bands that have done interviews.

Ariane: Have you been watching a lot of porn while you’ve been on the road?

Peter: Yeah, pretty common I think on tour buses.

Ariane: Is it? What’s your favorite?

Peter: Uh, I don’t know. Fuck.

Ariane: Do you have a favorite porn star?

Peter: I’ll take a vote, right (he asks the other boys)…Alicia Klass. Does that mean anything to you?

Ariane: Well, right now I’m all about Joanna Angel and Nina Hartley. Nina Hartley is really old-school porn. She’s been around forever.

(Peter tells the boys about Nina Hartley)

Ariane: How do you watch your porn? Do you watch it on the Internet, DVD’s, or magazines?

Peter: I guess DVDs.

Ariane: What’d you watch last night?

Peter: I didn’t, but someone’s telling me “18 and Ready to Fuck”!

Ariane: (giggling) Oh, you would never, right? Are you coming to New York soon?

Peter: Yeah, we’re playing the Bowery on the 16th or 17th, I believe.

Ariane: So where do you call home?

Peter: Pretty much the bus really. We’ve been out here for six months now but we’re still based in Wales essentially.

Ariane: What about all your girlfriends and your wives?

Peter: They came out to see us once and I went back for a week at one point. You know, that’s just one of the things you’ve got to deal with.

Ariane: I have a secret for you.

Peter: Ok…

Ariane: Do you guys have Macs on the bus?

Peter: Yeah, we do.

Ariane: So, do you guys utilize the isight?

Peter: Yeeahh, the funny thing is you can’t go from PC to Mac to PC ‘cause my girlfriend has a PC…

Ariane: Oooh…

Peter: And that’s the one spider in the works, but Gareth actually uses it daily.

Ariane: Well, I just learned about it, so I feel it’s my duty to spread the word. It’s live porn! What could be better?

Peter: (laughing) That’s true.

Ariane: Did you write the song, Black Widow?

Peter: Yup.

Ariane: Is that song about anyone in particular?

Peter: Yeah, of course. It’s about that feeling when your girlfriend attracts a lot of attention when you walk into a club or a pub and she pretends that she doesn’t know.

Ariane: Oh, because she’s so beautiful that everyone gravitates to her?

Peter: Yeah, that sort of thing.

Ariane: Are you still with that girlfriend?

Peter: Yeah, we joke about it but I think it’s definitely something that appeals to a lot of people.

Ariane: Well, that’s sweet. I misinterpreted it as people usually do when it comes to lyrics. I heard “Black Widow” and thought of being bitten and ultimately killed, but I like your version better. I think that’s about it. Thank you so much.

Peter: Well, come down to the Bowery. I think we’re having a party afterwards.

Ariane: Sure will.
