JOANNA: OK, state your name and what you do in Chik Chik Chik.
ALAN: Hi, my name's Alan... Im kind of miscellaneous.
JOANNA: (laughs) And what does that mean?
ALAN: Well, I play percussion and saxophone and keyboards, which essentially means I run around a lot and take care of the little spices on top of the meat, if you will. You have your drums, and your bass, and guitar, and I just kind of add spice on top of it. Thats what I do.
JOANNA: How long have you guys been a band for?
ALAN: About 8 years.
JOANNA: Over the past few years, like, indie music has become not so indie anymore. Bands like Modest Mouse and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are featured in Spin and Rolling Stone and have videos on MTV. How has this commercialization affected the crowd at your show?
ALAN: Well, the crowd has definitely changed. I mean, mostly weve just been playing different places. I remember when we first started, our friend booked a tour for us and we just played emo shows and houses and stuff, and it was just like, we were absolutely not where we needed to be at all. I mean it was really rad for a first tour, and we did have a lot of fun, but as weve grown our base has changed, and so has our crowd and the people that like us. In the last couple years weve played more dance-oriented clubs than emo or indie rock shows.
JOANNA: Do you think that this electronic music conference were at now is an appropriate festival for you guys to play?
ALAN: Well we dont consider ourselves an electronic band, but we do use electronics. We like to consider ourselves a dance band. We like making music to dance to.
JOANNA: Do you like to dance?
ALAN: (laughs) Yeah, I do actually.
(Mario stops by)
JOANNA: What's your name? Welcome to your interview.
MARIO: I'm Mario.
JOANNA: Mario, OK. Now what do you do in Chik Chik Chik?
MARIO: I play guitar.
JOANNA: You play guitar. Have you been in the band the whole time?
MARIO: Yes I have.
JOANNA: OK, so do you ever watch porn?
ALAN: Um, not really.
JOANNA: Are you trying to tell me you've never watched a porn?
ALAN: Well, I guess I watch it sometimes, but I mean, Im not like a porn enthusiast. I mean, I'm not like a fiend or anything.
JOANNA: So are you saying that you watch it, but you don't really need to watch it?
ALAN: Um, yeah I guess I dont need it. Sometimes I guess Ill look at pictures of naked girls.
JOANNA: Only pictures?
ALAN: Um, yeah in the event that I do watch porn I usually look at pictures yeah.
JOANNA: Mario, do you watch porn, ever?
MARIO: Uh, uh. (laughs) Yeah, sure, occasionally. Yeah, I mean this is kinda weird. Weve never been asked this in an interview.
JOANNA: (laughs) Well you're being interviewed for a porn site. Did you know that?
MARIO: Yeah, I found out on the way here. Like Nick told me, after we got off the phone, I was like whats Burning Angel? Is it like a zine or something like that? And hes like no, its an online porno site. I was like oh wow, its our first time.
JOANNA: Well, I'm glad I broke your porn-site-interview-virginity.
(laughs)
JOANNA: So do you ever watch porn?
MARIO: Uh, I have. Plenty of times.
JOANNA: You have?
MARIO: Yes.
JOANNA: Do you enjoy it?
MARIO: I usually find it like, pretty disappointing.
JOANNA: What's lacking from it?
MARIO: Uh, but, I dont know. I mean, its always been like this sort of like mild entertainment.
JOANNA: (looks down at hand and sees ring) Are you married?
MARIO: Yes, this is my wife actually (puts arm around woman next to him).
JOANNA: Oh really?
MARIO: Yes, this is my wife, Lisa.
JOANNA: So after this interview is over and you walk away, can I try and recruit your wife to be on BurningAngel?
MARIO: Uh, I wouldn't be into that.
JOANNA: Would that make you uncomfortable?
MARIO: I think maybe at one point in my life I would have thought that was intriguing, but, like I don't know. Now I feel a lot more possessive over her. (laughs)
LISA: Yeah, he's real over-protective.
MARIO: I kind of freak out that like, if the windows are open and shes changing or something like that, I'm like, what the fuck?
JOANNA: It's a good thing we're not married.
MARIO: (laughs) Yeah.
JOANNA: Can I give you guys a lap dance?
LISA: I wouldn't want to see anyone give him a lap dance and he wouldn't want the same for me.
JOANNA: A lot of couples come into my strip club and get lap dances. Every once in a while they'll do it to spice up their sex lives or something.
MARIO: I don't think we need any spicing up. Weve known each other since we were 16, so we just know exactly what the other one is thinking.
JOANNA: Damn it. I really think I could give you guys a good lap dance. Just give me a chance!
MARIO: I uh, Im sorry. This is just the way I am. This isnt really the right place for that kind of thing anyway.
(Lisa laughs)
JOANNA: There's not that many people around.
MARIO: I'm sorry
(laughs)
JOANNA: Alright, is there anything else you want to say?
(laughs)
MARIO: Uh, no, I think Im done.
JOANNA: You sure I can't give her a lap dance?
MARIO: Uh
LISA: I think I'd have to have a couple shots before I agreed to that.
MARIO: Why do you keep asking me this?
JOANNA: I don't take rejection very well.
MARIO: I think Lisa and I are both a little too sober right now.
JOANNA: Well I suggest you go do something about that. There are more drugs and alcohol at this music conference than I've ever seen in my life. It's quite the opposite of a hardcore fest.
MARIO: Yeah, I just wanted to wait until after we played.
JOANNA: Well I won't keep you for any longer. You should really go start drinking.
MARIO: (laughs) OK.
JOANNA: Thanks for the interview guys. written by: Joanna posted by: Alex Chechs
