Slash
I know. You probably all think this is a lie but really, when I was at SXSW, I ran into Slash at some lame posh record executive sort of gathering thing at the Four Seasons hotel. I didnt recognize him at first; he was really tan, his hair was much tamer and there were no intentional holes in his jeans. It was little bit disappointing that he wasn't as outlandish as he used to be, but I gotta hand it to him. Unlike most of the 80s novelties, Slash was in pretty good shape.

JOANNA: OK. State your name.
SLASH: Slash.
JOANNA: What have you been doing the past couple of years? We havent really seen you.
SLASH: What are you talkin about!? Ive been all over the place more often than I should be. Right now Im working on this band with Duff Makagan. Im out here cause Im playing with the Yardbirds tomorrow. But Im also looking for a singer.
JOANNA: Were you upset that Guns N' Roses did a tour without you?
SLASH: (looks really disgusted) Nah. If anything I thought it was kinda entertaining.
JOANNA: So Slash, do you ever watch porn?
SLASH: Um, I used to be a huge porno guy. I sort of grew out of it I guess. I used to go out with some porno chicks.
JOANNA: Who did you go out with that was a porno chick?
SLASH: Who did I go out with? It doesnt really matter. My porn days were like, layovers from the 70's, so as corny as it sounds, as soon as it went to video its been low rent ever since. So I dont really get into current porn anymore.
JOANNA: So I guess you dont watch Internet porn or anything like that.
SLASH: No, Im not really an Internet type of guy. I stopped at the fax machine as far as advancements in technology go.
JOANNA: What about strip clubs and stuff? Do you still go?
SLASH: Yeah. The strip clubs and that whole scene is sort of uh (tries to think of the right word) well, its important. You need that you know? Its a certain kind of vibe. The rock n rollers and the strippers kinda go hand in hand. I mean, for a musician, what better place could you go to than where they play loud music and girls get naked?
JOANNA: (looks down and sees ring) So even though youre married youll still go once in awhile?
SLASH: Yeah, shell go with me.
JOANNA: Yeah, Im a dancer myself and
SLASH: Are you kidding me? You look like youre about 12!
JOANNA: (laughs) No, Im 22. But anyway, its fun when couples come in. How long have you been married for?
SLASH: Ive only actually been married for a little over a year. She had to go through a long period of trying to turn me into a proper husband. I didnt really have to prove anything, but she had to get me into certain habits. She had to put a leash on me a little bit.
JOANNA: Are there any new bands you listen to these days? Are you looking forward to seeing anyone at SXSW?
SLASH: Im really just looking to see if there are any good singers I can steal.
JOANNA: So there arent any other bands around now that youre into.
SLASH: Only our band. Were the only good Rock N' Roll band out there. No, I like Coldplay, but thats kinda a different type of music than I play. As far as Rock N Roll is concerned its completely dead. Foo Fighters and Queens (of the Stone Age) are the only two bands that are around right now that are really out there, you know? Theres probably some good ones I dont know about but theyre probably not getting any recognition.
JOANNA: There are a lot of good bands out there, I guess you gotta just look around.
SLASH: Yeah, totally. In a selfish way I kinda dont care about other bands, I just wanna focus on getting this thing going, cause as soon as its done, itll be the most killer thing around.
JOANNA: What does it sound like?
SLASH: Well, its loud. Its really hard rock but done in a natural way. No one really does that anymore. No one records or plays guitar like that. Were just a great bunch of musicians with killer songs and its very in your face.
JOANNA: Well I look forward to hearing it!
At this point Slash turned away looking annoyed and pretended to be focused on drinking his beer. I took the hint, turned off the tape recorder and assumed the interview was over.
