I was on my way back from Jersey today, and it was awful. the traffic was unbearable (not that I was driving but I was still present for the hour it took us from the top of the garden state parkway to half way across the tappan zee bridge).
We finally got back into maine, it was about 9 hours and 10 minutes into a 9 hour 45 minute trip, when I spot some staties parked up in the middle of the highway with their lights on (there was no traffic because it was midnight and it's Maine) and right right right in front of one of the police cars is this bigass bullmoose! but it was laying down...on it's side..kinda dead. the car that hit it was totaled (i'm sure) but the guy appeared to be alive which is good. Before I moved here i kinda thought a moose is similar to a deer, but it's closer in size to a mini-van...actually, they're bigger than mini-vans but they have those long thin legs. This thing laying down was at least a car length from back to hoof and an entire highway-lane's width from head to butt.
It was really sad because i'd never seen a moose up close before and the first one i saw was dead :(
So this is my PSA, if you're ever driving up here, don't go too fast, cuz when there's a moose in the road you don't see it till you're right up under it because the body of the animal is above where your headlights hit, and if there is a moose in your direct path aim the hit the back legs of it, to knock it away from your car and limit injury to yourself.
